The Washington Demographic Society was started in 2025 by a group of demographers, led by Toshiko Kaneda and Mark Mather of the Population Reference Bureau and John Haaga, retired civil servant, to provide a forum for presentations by experts and discussion of population trends and demographic research. Topics include a full range of population processes (fertility, health and mortality, migration…) and all stages of the life cycle, at regional, national, and global levels.
Everyone interested in population issues is welcome to join and encouraged to participate, with the understanding that we strive to base interpretations on data and to respect differences of opinion on policy.
The first meeting was held in September 2025. Meetings are planned for the second Thursday of every month except in the summer, at 5:00 PM. Meetings are currently being held in-person. The Population Reference Bureau has generously allowed WDS to meet in its conference room, in suite 400 of 1111 19th Street NW, Washington DC.
WDS will conduct elections for officers, and nominate members for a Program Committee, in early 2026.
